Art and Design Curriculum Aims

Heathfields

Art and Design

Our curriculum intent

From EYFS through to year 2, we aim provide every child with the opportunities to explore art and design creatively. We foster children’s natural curiosity to explore art and design through imagination and creativity. We want our children to have opportunities to be inspired, excited and curious about art. We want our children to learn about and appreciate the work of artists from the past and modern day, observing and expressing their own opinions and understanding that art can be interpreted in different ways. We want our children to think of themselves as artists and designers and guide them to explore a range of different resources, approaches and techniques. We want our children to enjoy exerting their creativity and self-expression in their own unique way.

Implementation

In Early Years we believe in the importance of learning through play. Our children have constant access to art materials as part of their daily provision. We provide opportunities for our children to draw from their imagination and observation. We encourage the development of their communication and language skills through talking about their creations and sharing these with others to raise their self-esteem. We discuss and evaluate the work of artists and creators from the past. We aim to teach our children the key skills and knowledge to begin to think like artists and be proud of the pieces that they have created.

As children move into Key stage 1, Art and design follows the National curriculum. With more formal structured lessons which focus on teaching our children the important skills to develop them as artists.

Each unit of work, allows opportunities for the children to:

· Generate Ideas (e.g. by looking at the work of artists or exploring the physical world)

· Make (Exploring and using materials)

· Evaluation (Show interest in and describe the work of others)

· Develop Knowledge & Understanding (e.g. be able to express preferences, talk about materials they have used).

We want our children to:

· Develop the ability to control materials, tools and techniques through practise, including the use of a sketchbook.

· Have the opportunity to record from first-hand experience and from imagination.

· Develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

· Develop their confidence and ability to produce art, including drawing, painting, printing, sculpture.

· Have opportunities to make careful observations of art and express their own opinions.

· Develop creativity and imagination through a range of art and design mediums

· Develop opportunities to use their own ideas when creating.

· Increase their awareness of art and design in different times and cultures.

· Foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers

· Be resilient and independent, to not become discouraged when things don’t go right the first time and learn from their mistakes.

Impact

Our children at Heathfields Infant school will have developed a love for art and design. They with have become confident and enthusiastic artists who are equipped with a wide range of skills which will allow them to experiment and explore successfully when completing their own works of art.

We firmly believe that all children are artists and aim to instal a love and appreciation of the Arts that will last a lifetime.

Wilnecote

Art and design allows children to develop their imagination and creativity. At  Wilnecote Junior Academy, we deliver a rich, skills-based curriculum which encourages children to experiment with a wide range of different mediums.

Art and design allows skills to be developed and built upon before culminating in a final creative piece. This final piece may be created by an individual or collaboratively in small groups, or even a whole class.

Children will develop their ability to control tools and techniques. Their ideas and thought processes are collated in their own sketchbooks.

Each unit of work, allows opportunities for the children to:

Through our Art and Design curriculum, teachers:

  • plan to enable all learners to make connections between prior knowledge and new learning, developing their techniques and applying their understanding to art projects
  • ensure art techniques are well-modelled because effective modelling and opportunities for children to explore the resources and practise in their sketchbooks helps them to build confidence
  • encourage children to communicate their ideas and understanding orally and through a range of media
  • teach children how to observe like an artist i.e. considering colour, texture, tone, perspective
