Helping your child with spellings

Frodsham Weaver Vale Primary School: Spelling and Grammar

Many discussions with parents regarding spelling are often centred around the fact that their child seems to forget how to spell words. This page contains spelling activities that aim to not only help your child to remember the spelling of new words, but will hopefully be fun to do too.

Top tips for spelling

1. Practise little and often.

2. Review the words your child can already spell. Practise them once or twice before looking at new words as this will boost their confidence.

3. Encourage your child to try spelling the word in parts, sounding it out using their phonic skills and breaking it up into syllables.

 4. When children are ready, start looking at prefixes, e.g. unhappy, compound words, e.g. flower/pot and root words, e.g. bake in bakery.
