Winter illness
As the temperatures drop, winter brings not only festive cheer but also an increase in seasonal illnesses. Common conditions like cold, flu, RSV, and even pneumonia tend to spread more easily during this time because we spend more time indoors and in close contact with others. Here’s what you need to know to keep our school community healthy and safe.
Common Winter Illnesses
- Common Cold: Runny nose, sore throat, mild fever, and cough.
- Influenza (Flu): High fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, and respiratory symptoms.
- RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus): Can cause severe illness in infants and older adults.
- Pneumonia: Persistent cough, fever, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
- Norovirus (“Winter Vomiting Bug”): Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Top Tips to Prevent Illness
- Get Vaccinated: Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are strongly recommended. Ask your doctor about RSV and pneumococcal vaccines for those at higher risk.
- Practice Good Hygiene: Wash hands with soap for 20 seconds, use hand sanitizer, and avoid touching your face.
- Cover Coughs and Sneezes: Use a tissue or your elbow.
- Stay Home When Sick: Prevent spreading germs by resting at home until symptoms improve.
- Improve Ventilation: Open windows briefly or use air filters to reduce airborne viruses indoors.
- Healthy Habits: Eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep to boost immunity.
